Kim Dotcom launches Mega, successor to Megaupload

modelingExactly one year after shutting down Megaupload.com Kim Dotcom with his team officially launched new and improved version of the defunct Megaupload file-hosting service.  And if you are asking yourself, if it is still popular, here is the answer. According to Dotcom`s twitter they have 100 000 users less than 1 hour.

Mega offers 50 GB storage limit on a free account and that is much more than offer the other providers. E.g. Dropbox gives you 2 GB storage limit for free, Ubuntu One a Google Drive 5 GB and SkyDrive from Microsoft offers 25 GB.

Users can subscribe also for premium accounts, which were divided into 3 packets. Premium accounts start at $9.99 per month for which users get 500GB of storage and 1 TB for data transfers. With Pro 2 you can use 2TB storage and 4 TB for data transfer and the most premium packet offers 4 TB storage and 8 TB data transfer,

Mega encrypts all uploaded files by default. For encryption is used algorithm Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and it generates for uploader a unique key. This key for decryption will be not placed on Mega. This means that no one except the uploader of a file can see what it contains, unless he or she shares the private key with someone else. It also means that providers have not any responsibility for uploaded file on their servers,

There are still many features and tools in the pipeline which will be released in the coming weeks and months. The development roadmap lists mobile access, sync tools for all major platforms, and a mount for Windows.
