Samsung Unveils its Next High-Performance Application Processor for Smartphone and Tablet Devices

Samsung officially revealed the Exynos 4212, a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 application processor designed on its 32-nm High-K Metal Gate (HK/MG) low-power process. Samsung said this process node is specifically tuned to offer "a competitive, cutting-edge platform" with double the logic density and a 30-percent lower power-level over the previous process generation. According to the company, the new Exynos processor features an enhanced GPU that is capable of delivering 50-percent higher 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung. It also incorporates a "portfolio" of advanced codec accelerators that support digital still images, video recording and play-back at 1080p full-HD resolution, an image signal processor and an on-chip HDMI 1.4 interface.

ARM Reveals 8-Core GPU For Superphones

ARM revealed a new GPU built for high performance devices like superphones, tablets and smart-TVs, called the ARM Mali-T658. This latest edition to the Midgard architecture-based GPU family promises to deliver up to ten times the graphics performance of the Mali-400 MP GPU which is found in a wide range of today's mainstream consumer products. It also promises four times the GPU Compute performance of the Mali-T604 GPU. According to ARM, the GPU supports a wide range of graphics and compute APIs including Microsoft DirectX 11, Khronos OpenGL ES, OpenVG, Khronos OpenCL, Google Renderscript and Microsoft DirectCompute.
