Sustained monsoon rain has led to unusually heavy flooding in Thailand; a situation which is likely to have a major impact on the worldwide supply of hard disks. The country, which is the world’s second largest hard disk exporter, plays home to many manufacturing plants belonging to the world’s biggest storage companies.
Western Digital Corp. the world’s largest HDD manufacturer in terms of volume, has 37,000 workers in Thailand, and production in the country accounts for 60 percent of the company’s total capacity. Toshiba employs about 3,900 workers in Thailand, and approximately 50 percent of the company’s manufacturing capacity is in the country.
