Alive Dinosaurs with Cinema4D

Cinema4DA time ago archeologist in Germany found fossilized remains of a before unknown raptor sub-species. This discovery was amazing for the paleontologist in Germany and it was quickly decided that the unknown species should be bring to life. The job of making this million year’s dead dinosaur look alive took a German animation studio Soulpix which job was to make a documentary about this new discovery.

The VFX team went and filmed real environment which should use like a background later for the dinosaur and also HDRI images using a glass sphere which should later help illuminate the scene. Other members of the team in the meantime started to work on visualization of the raptor in Cinema4D. The artist was working closely with paleontologist using numerous photos of skeleton like a reference for their model.  The integration of BodyPaint 3D in CINEMA 4D made possible to create authentic textures used for the dinosaur model.

Later a combination of V-Ray and Cinema4D was used to breathe life to the dinosaur. CINEMA 4D’s layer-based and very intuitive material system made it possible to quickly create Shaders for Vray. This excellent combination created realistic looking models perfectly shaped in to the real filmed background. The postproduction was made in Adobe After Effects were created depth of field, motion blur and any last-minute color correction to give the renderings their final polish. Few images from the movie are below.
